AICW not just about celebrity quotient: FDCI's Sunil Sethi

The stage is set for the launch of the Amazon India Couture Week (AICW) 2015, a five-day fashion event, which will showcase a wide array of collections from designers through 11 shows starting Wednesday. Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) president Sunil Sethi says the event doesn't just have a celebrity quotient, but always generates business.

The event will have Kangana Ranaut as the showstopper for Manav Gangwani, Richa Chadha for Reynu Taandon while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be walking the ramp after five years for ace designer Manish Malhotra at the gala's finale.

"This is the best event in the country not because of the celebrity quotient which comes with it, but because of the business that it gives," Sethi told IANS.

"All my designers and the clothes are actually the showstoppers and the stars in the couture Week. They have been working for months for the preparation. It's not like pret where they are taking just a month for the collection. It takes three to four months of dedicated hard work.

"It has quality more than quantity... It is not an easy job to make couture," he added.

Saying that "customers have evolved now", Sethi highlighted the shift in the design trends over the years.

"Customers are evolved now. There was no red carpet in the past, nobody was wearing gowns in weddings. Only in two or three colours, but that's it. Look at the colour experimentation, patchwork, different embroidery and silhouette. This type of variety for different occasions are seeing a change now," he added.

He also said that in the past, people didn't understand the term couture, but now the landscape is changing as people are trying to experiment with new designs.

"In the past, people didn't understand couture. I am still saying that we may not be as pure as the term goes in Paris and Milan, but this is the reality that in India there is a lot of celebration.

"When you say bridal, you think of lehenga but when you wait and see, you see a huge transformation. Now at every cocktail and reception, people don't want to wear traditional Indian wear. That is what couture is offering them. Couture is made especially for someone. This is something that you wear on occasion," he said.

Pointing out at why couture is often understood as bridal wear in India, he said: "In India since weddings are very big, our couture is used there also and now look at the experiments in the traditional lehenga. There was a time when only three colours were used - maroon, red and pink and may be green sometimes. So, frankly of course I will say that some of our products may be for bridal market, but it is still made especially for that so we are still calling it couture."

AICW will begin here on July 29 and will end on August 2. It will feature fashion designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Varun Bahl, Manish Malhotra, Rohit Bal and Rahul Mishra among others.

While Mishra is making his debut at AICW, Mukherjee's show will stand out as his creations will be matched with iconic footwear with red soles by French footwear designer Christian Louboutin, and Bal plans to impress the capital's fashion aficionados with an offsite show.

HC response on Kashmir documentary screening

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to documentary filmmaker Pankaj Butalia while hearing an appeal by the censor board challenging a single judge order asking it to issue a certificate for public screening without any cuts to his film "Textures of Loss" based on violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

A division bench of Chief Justice G.Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath was also informed by film director that the censor board asked him to delete some scene of film but it has been shown in four film festivals with official permission without a single cut.
The bench posted the matter for August 13 saying the matter requires consideration and sought response from Butalia.
The single judge had in May asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a certificate of screening to the movie without deletion of any scenes on a plea filed by the filmmaker challenging the censor board's refusal to clear his documentary, which features interviews of people who lost their kin in the conflict and violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
Some of them condemned India and the army, while others spoke about jihad. The censor board had sought some cuts in the documentary, but Butalia maintained that he was merely depicting different opinions.

Singapore Film Festival to be held in Delhi in August

On the occasion of Singapore's 50th birthday, its High Commission here is organizing a Singapore Film Festival next month.
To be held on August 13, August 14 and August 16, the fest is being organised in partnership with the Directorate of Film Festivals, India.
Seven films -- both feature and shorts -- by Singapore filmmakers will be screened, read a statement.
There will also be workshops and post-screening dialogues with Singapore filmmakers Boo Junfeng, Sun Koh and Jow Zhi Wei, who will be travelling to the capital for the festival.
The theme for the festival is 'Stories from the Heartland'.
The term 'Heartland' is commonly used in Singapore to refer to the towns and neighbourhoods where people live, gather and play.

The films also showcase a unique aspect of Singapore - its multi-culturalism, where different races such as Chinese, Indians and Malays learn to live together in harmony.
Each film screening will be followed by interactive sessions and quizzes based on the films.
To introduce the festival and Singapore's film scene, Sun Koh will speak on immigration, multi-culturalism and Singapore cinema on the opening night on August 13.
On August 14, in 'An Outing with Jow Zhi Wei: A Production Talk', Wei will share his journey as a filmmaker.
Femme Sauvage is an interactive session with Sun Koh, who will speak about her journey as a female filmmaker in Singapore.
The festival will round off on August 16, with a Masterclass on the making of short films by Junfeng.
The festival will be accompanied by a photography exhibition, featuring images that reveal facets of Singaporean culture and society.
Other Singapore offerings such as snacks, souvenirs and photo booths will also be available at the venue.

11 Inspirational Quotes of Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam

Bollywood is a purely money-driven industry : Indian Oceans Rahul Ram

New Delhi, July 28 (IANS) The musical landscape of the Hindi film industry is constantly evolving and Rahul Ram, vocalist and bassist of long-running folk rock band Indian Ocean, believes Bollywood has changed and its a purely money-driven industry.
I think the music evolves on its own. If something works, people would want to go in that direction. Bollywood has changed. Its a purely money-driven industry, Ram told IANS in a telephonic interview.
The musician, who has composed three songs for Neeraj Ghaywans directorial debut, the Cannes- acclaimed Masaan, with his band Indian Ocean, says if themusic of the film gets appreciated, then more people would want to follow that.
Asked about the evolution of indie music in India, the musician said that every Indian indie band needs a chance to exhibit their talent.
He isnt, however, too keen on using the term indie music for independent artists in India, and says that its important to coin a new nomenclature altogether.
We have to come with our own nomenclature. Non-Bollywood, non-traditional is a better term than indie. We are searching for a term for Indian Ocean for the last 25 years. We call Indian Ocean as frock folk rock, he quipped.
Indian Ocean have adequate material for a new full-length and have worked on two new songs with legendary ghatam player Pandit Vikku Vinayakram and saxophonist George Brooks, says Ram.
We have another new song ready, which we will perform in Bangalore on July 31. We are doing a set called Side A, Side B. It will be a four-hour concert, including a track from Masaan, he said.
For Masaan, the story of which revolves around four lives which intersect along the Ganga river, Indian Ocean created heart-warming music that duly fits in with the films aesthetics.
Basically, after initial talks with Neeraj, we figured that there will be one love track in the film, which was Tu kisi rail si guzarti hai. To get the actual tune took us a long time. We went through four-five variations for it.
The second song Mann kasturi was approved of within an hour. I hadnt even seen the lyrics. Neeraj and Varun Grover (writer) were coming from Mumbai to listen to the music. They heard the tune and loved it. It was fixed there and then, Ram said about the musical compositions of Masaan.
The third song titled Bhor is however an old Indian Ocean song from their album Jhini, which was rendered in a different version for the film, says Ram.
The third song was a version of our song which we released in 2003. Its called Bhor. In the final edit, Neeraj had taken the original version of the song, which is way faster. But I told him that its not working out. I am talking about a completely different mood, so I had to persuade him to use a new version, he added.
Talking about the recording process of this song, Ram said it was recorded in a different way from how music is recorded in studios nowadays.
The way we recorded it is also different. Four of us stood in four different parts of the studio and played with the song. Nikhil was on guitars, Amit with flute and all three of us had vocals and we sang. And when we felt we have a version that was adequate, we thought that we should go and repair it, he said.
Around 50 years back, there were just two tracks, so the whole orchestra used to play together. Even the old jazz records were recorded in that manner. The feel of interacting with each other is there in those live recordings, but now that feel is gone, he added.

Muzaffar Ali wanted to cast Big B and Naseruddin Fo Janisaar

Mumbai, July 28 (IANS) Umrao Jaan director Muzaffar Ali is all set to exhibit his acting skills in his directorial Jaanisaar, but he has revealed that he was earlier planning to cast Amitabh Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah for the role, which eventually he did himself.
According to the demand of the script, there was a need of a person who somewhat resembled me. We were thinking about Naseer and Amitabh, but both of them didnt have the time. Thats according to us, but according to them, we would have perhaps got their time only after two years, Ali said here.
Ali says his son Shaad prompted him to do the film. My son told me that I should do the role. I told him that if youll be around, then Ill do it and eventually I did it, he said.
He even quipped that he committed a mistake by agreeing to act in the film.
If you look at my character, youll find that the character is extremely exciting. He is a person who has experienced 1857 and he has noticed how there was a corpse hanging on every tree. He realised that for this revolt, not just aggression, but consciousness was also required.
Hes trying to keep alive the fire while also becoming an inspiration for the girl (Pernia Qureshi), and he is aware of all the secrets associated with this boy (Imran Abbas) which gets revealed in the end, Ali said of his character.
The scenes featuring the director have been helmed by his son Shaad, who hasearlier directed Saathiya. Jaanisaar is releasing on August 7.
